Dr. Adriana Silva | Genetic Epidemiology | Research excellence Award

Dr. Adriana Silva | A.T. Still University | United States

Dr. Adriana Silva is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at A.T. Still University, Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health, with a strong multidisciplinary foundation spanning Dentistry (DDS), Public Health (MPH, PhD), Molecular Genetics, and Cell Biology. Trained across leading institutions in Brazil and the United States, she integrates expertise in oral sciences, epidemiology, biostatistics, and genetic analysis to investigate how environmental and genetic determinants shape complex oral diseases, particularly orofacial clefts, oral potentially malignant disorders, and oral cancer. Her work has revealed critical links between single nucleotide variants in Wnt genes and oral cancer susceptibility, demonstrating how genes associated with craniofacial development may contribute to malignant transformation when combined with exposures such as tobacco use. She has conducted research at the University of Pittsburgh under Dr. Alexandre Vieira and collaborates closely with Dr. Mariana Bezamat and Dr. Ann Spolarich, contributing to multidisciplinary projects involving clinical, epidemiologic, and genetic data. Dr. Silva has produced impactful findings on genetic ancestry and oral cancer risk in Brazilian and U.S. populations, with evidence showing elevated oral cancer susceptibility among self-identified African Americans independent of socioeconomic factors. Her broader work includes contributions to pediatric dentistry through studies on Silver Diamine Fluoride, large-scale analyses of orofacial cleft epidemiology in Brazil, and multiple investigations linking genetic polymorphisms, tooth loss, and oral carcinogenesis. She has authored over 12 peer-reviewed publications across high-impact journals such as Head & Neck, Oral Diseases, Brazilian Oral Research, and The Cleft Palate–Craniofacial Journal. Her research has received growing scholarly attention, reflected in more than 150 citations and an h-index of 6, demonstrating the relevance of her work in genetic epidemiology and oral disease science. Dr. Silva continues advancing an independent research trajectory focused on integrating clinical phenotypes, genetic markers, and metabolomic profiles to improve early detection and risk stratification for oral cancer worldwide.
